Jay has won awards from all over the world. Today, he is often regarded as the best Asian male singer and put into the top pop star position among Chinese-speaking community, and the reputation earned him a title of "Little King of R&B". Though pop music scene became more diversified in 2004, Jay unsurprisingly snatched three awards including the Most Popular Male Singer, the Best Male Singer and the Best Singer-Songwriter, and nominated for many other awards of the Channel V awards. His single hit "Qilixiang" was also awarded "Song of the Year". Young, cool, full of vitality and with individuality, he is an idol of the young generation. He has released one album per year, selling several million copies each. His music has gained recognition throughout Asia, most notably in countries such as China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, and in overseas Chinese communities, winning more than 20 awards each year. In 2007, he was named one of the 50-most influential people in China by the British think tank Chatham House.
Also known as the King of Chinese music, he is known for combining both Chinese and Western musical styles to produce a fresh sound that is quite unlike what is produced in mainstream Taiwanese pop, and also for his unique lyrics which touch on various issues.
In contrast to the United States where a negative connotation is placed on celebrities who endorse commercial products ("selling out"), in Asia, acquiring endorsement contracts with major brands are positive testaments of star-status. Chou has been a spokesperson for popular brands such as Pepsi, Panasonic, Motorola M-Zone/China Mobile, Levi's, Deerhui, and Metersbonwe, Colgate, popular computer game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, science and nature magazine National Geographic. To maximize the celebrity branding effect, advertisements are nearly always linked to his music and TV commercials are occasionally directed by him. He acted as the tourism ambassador for Malaysia in 2003.
